Dylan Johnston.jpgDylan Johnston was a star shortstop for Hamilton High in the early 2000's. He was a key part of two state championship teams his sophomore and junior seasons, and his walkoff single in the state semifinal game his senior year allowed Hamilton to reach the title game three straight years. Called "One of the best hitters in Arizona" by his coach Mike Woods (eastvalleytribune.com), Johnston was drafted in the fourth round of the MLB amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs.
Johnston struggled in the early years of his professional career. He spent two disappointing seasons in Low A. After a brief stint with the Cubs's short season team, Johnston returned to Low A and had a breakout season in 2008. In 78 games he hit .288 with 17 doubles, 15 home runs, and 50 runs batted in. Having demonstrated his ability as a dangerous power hitter, Johnston was promoted to High A ball. Unfortunately, his promising career came to an abrupt halt because of a career ending injury. It was a cruel blow to Johnston, a player that had only begun to blossom at the pro level.
