Ty Wheeler was a dual sport athlete who attended Basha High in the late 2000's. A member of Basha's wrestling team, Wheeler also participated in rodeo events (team roping, shoot dogging, and calf roping) throughout the year. Claiming that his mother gave him an ultimatum between "bull riding or wrestling" (azcentral.com), Wheeler committed to wrestling. However, his love for rodeo did not disappear, so he elected to compete in "tamer" rodeo events. Even with the heavy workload proving to be a challenge, Wheeler excelled at the varsity level. He finished fifth in state his junior season in the 112 lbs weight class. He was even better his senior year, finishing as the state runner up and compiling a record of 27-5.
