A member of the football and basketball teams, he was a four time recipient of the Chandler High School Athlete of the Year award. He was an All-Region player his junior year. His senior year he was once again named to the All-Region team, and also earned recognition as a second team All-State player and first team All-East Valley member. Richardson enrolled at New Mexico State after high school, where he majored in eletrical engineering. As a junior he started every game at safety. He recorded at least four tackles in every contest, establishing himself as a physical, punishing safety. He had an even better senior season. He was the national leader in tackles per game with 12.5, an incredibly rare feat for a safety. He was named 2nd team All-WAC.

Richardson's love for hitting and superb senior season earned him a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Steeleers.
