Karen Self is the head coach of the women's basketball team at Seton Catholic High School. Self was a high school legend in New York in the mid-80's. A two sport athlete, she finished fifth nationally in shot put and was named a track and field All-American her senior year. Self was an even better basketball player. She led her team to a state title her senior year, was named to numerous All-American teams, and recorded 2,655 career points, a New York record that still stands. For her success in both the shotput and on the basketball court, Self was named the New York State Athlete of the Year.
Self elected to continue her playing career at Arizona State University. She recorded a breakout sophomore campaign, leading the team in points per game, assists, steals, field goal percentage, and free throw shooting percentage. Unfortunately, just as Self had come in to her own a back injury derailed her career. She missed her entire junior season and a part of her senior season, robbing ASU fans of a chance to witness a budding star maximize her career. Despite the injuries, Self was still named to the ASU and PAC10 All-Decade teams. She finished her career 5th all-time in scoring and 3rd all-time in steals; as impressive as these achievements are, it is bittersweet to know that Self could have broken both if she had remained healthy.
Having concluded her collegiate career, Self was given the head coaching position at Seton Catholic Prep. After finishing 13-13 her first season and "too intimidated by her first boss to quit" (eastvalleytribune.com), Self returned for a second season and began to fall in love with coaching. Self swiftly built Seton into a perennial contender. She won her first regional title just a few short years after taking over the job, and her first state title came in 1997. After winning three straight titles from1997-1999, Self once again found success on the biggest stage, winning titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. A distinguished coach whose numerous awards are a challenge to tally, Self has won two Coach of the Year awards. She also plays an important role in the preservation of the history of high school women's basketball: she has spent much of her time accumulating stats from by-gone eras and establishing a consistent, factual record book for her sport. An outstanding athlete herself, Self has proven to be an outstanding coach and a willing preserver of history.
